5 Tips to Make Your Attic More Useful
Having an attic can be a great asset to a home provided you can find what you store there. Not everyone wants to turn their attic into another bedroom. Most people would like to use it as an additional storage space. Do a little planning to ensure your attic is organized for maximum efficiency.
- Flooring – One of the first things you should do is floor your attic. This can be done with plywood, MDF, or wafer board.
- Lighting – Adequate lighting should be installed because there is normally no outside light which flows through the attic.
- Racks – Use a racking system or storage shelves for lighter items.
- Closet – Consider adding a closet made of cedar to store out-of-season clothing.
- Ventilation – Install ventilation so you can perform some of your hobbies in the attic like sewing, bedazzling, or even working out on a weight machine.
You should never put too much weight on the attic floor so don’t go overboard with storing extremely heavy items. Spread the weight out over the attic. Attics are perfect spots for storage or additional work spaces. If you are lucky enough to have an attic, set it up so you can get the most use out of it.

These are some great ideas to utilize all of that extra space in the attic. However, consumers will want to be sure to have the attic insulated sufficiently before they turn it into a functional room. Depending on which climate zone you live, these attic suggestions may no be applicable. for example, in New England home’s are supposed to have around a r49 or 18 inches of insulation.
A nice compromise in these colder zones would be to section off part of your attic for storage for these great ideas above and insulate to the appropriate level in the rest of the areas.

That is an excellent suggestion. Insulation is definitely important.
