Choosing the Right Sofa for Your Living Room

August 22nd, 2008 by Home Pro

Most industry professionals will suggest that the sofa is the focal point of living room furniture.  Not only is it the focal point, it can be one of the most expensive items for your home.  With many styles and designs available, it is important to put some thought into what type of sofa would best suit your individual living style and taste prior to purchasing.

Measure your living room and decide what size sofa would fit in the available space.  Next think about style and comfort.  Many modern or contemporary sofas aren’t the best on which to relax, but if you are more concerned with style, there are many designs from which to choose.  Think about the function of the sofa.  Is it for relaxing or to be situated in a more formal setting?

Just as with most any other item we purchase, there are various grades of sofas.  You want a sofa to last so determine what type of material is used and how it is assembled.  Choosing a harder wood or steel will help ensure the longevity of the sofa.  Frames which are assembled with screws are also preferable to those which use nails or staples.

Get a grasp of the basics of sofas and how they are constructed.  You can find any style or design you want, but if you don’t have one that is quality made under the fabric, it might not last as long as you would like.
Seating and cushion filling is also important in the life of a sofa.  Look for springs that are tied together versus a wire coil system.  Foam has been the standard for cushions over the years, but down is also coming to the forefront and is a great base for cushioning.
