How to Accurately Measure for Your New Living Room Furniture
October 24th, 2008 by Home Pro
One of the biggest mistakes made in selecting living room furniture is purchasing the furniture prior to measuring the available space in your living room. Taking the extra time to measure prior to purchase will probably save you money as well as a lot of headache.
Most people think if they know the square footage of the room, they are ready to go. You tend to forget about things like wall lengths, window lengths and heights, doors, closets, and air vents. These all come into play in living room furniture placement. Take time to do the following before purchasing your new furniture:
1. Measure the area of your living room (length x width).
2. Measure the length and height of any windows.
3. Make a sketch of your living room. Note the length and height of any walls, the location of electrical outlets, air vents, windows, etc.
4. Don’t forget about existing doors in the room. Do they open into the room?
5. Measure existing items that will remain in the room such as your television. What is its width and height? Will it remain in the same location? The same goes for your stereo units.
Taking a little extra time to really know your living room and have the correct measurements is the first step in purchasing new living room furniture. Armed with this information, you will be able to buy the furniture that will work based on the actual room but in any style you choose.
