How To Select Cabinets
February 25th, 2008 by DirectproThe kind of kitchen cabinets you choose for remodeling will have a significant impact on the outcome of your project. Kitchen cabinets make up the bulk of the cost of renovations — as much as 50 percent. That’s why choosing the appropriate kitchen cabinet is so important. Cabinets come in three basic categories: stock, semi-custom and custom cabinets.
- Stock cabinets are the least expensive and are constructed using standard shapes and sizes.
- Semi-custom cabinets are built in a factory and come in many choices with storage options for more customizable solutions.
- Custom built kitchen cabinets are built in any style or finish with designer specifications.

Would I be wasting my money by re-facing my kitchen cabinets, or should I consider replacing them altogether?

Actually, it depends on your overall satisfaction with your kitchen layout. If you are satisfied with your existing layout and plan to live in your home for a few more years but want a new style, then consider refacing your kitchen. This is a good idea if your existing cabinets are in good structural condition and you have enough storage and counter space. Refacing is a remodeling job that gives you that custom look at an affordable price. It consists of covering the exterior surfaces of your cabinets with new laminate. The doors and drawer fronts are replaced, and the front and side panels are treated with fresh paint or new veneer. When you reface cabinets, there is less mess, no damages to your walls and floors, and hardly any disruption to your kitchen use. Most refacing jobs take a few days, but it can take longer depending how big the project is. If you can afford to, look into changing your countertop, changing your wall color, and adding a few kitchen accessories to compliment your new kitchen style.
If you plan on selling your home, take in consideration that your cabinets can influence a potential buyer’s purchasing decision. Remodeling your kitchen is the best way to increase the value of your home. As you take the big step toward remodeling your kitchen, be certain of what kind of investment is really needed. A big investment is only worth it if your kitchen really needs it or if you plan on being in your house for some time. If you are about to sell, go for a lesser refinishing investment to be sure you’ll get a maximum return.

We are building a new home and want our laundry room to be as efficient as possible with plenty of storage space. Do you have any recommendations for cabinet choices, style, etc?

Hi Grace,
When designing your laundry room, it’s important to keep in mind your home’s scheme. Choose cabinets, flooring and countertops that match with other rooms in the house. This combination transforms the laundry room into a seamless continuation of the home.
A good laundry room will also provide a wide, flat area for folding. Also, with so many of today’s clothes requiring drip-drying, make sure the hanging rods are near the floor drain. Another useful design feature for a laundry room is the installation of sorting bins. One idea involves installing a series of standard plastic laundry baskets on a long shelf over the washer and dryer. Label each basket: hand wash, permanent press, whites, cold wash, colors, etc. You could even have bins for dry cleaning, clothes that need mending, and clothes to give to the local shelter.
Another consideration for your laundry room is adequate space. Laundry rooms need additional storage because they often act as a household’s drop-off point. Items that you would like to keep hidden from view can be concealed in floor-to-ceiling wall cabinets, while cleaning agents and other accessories are easily accessible in cabinets above the washer and dryer.
