Build Yourself a Patio

November 25th, 2008 by Home Pro

If you want to create an outdoor patio where you can sit and relax or enjoy spending time with others, build yourself a patio. If you can afford a contractor – fantastic! If not, do it yourself with these handy tips.

To start with, decide on the location where the patio is to be built.  Keep in mind the location of the house and the landscaping around it.  Be careful to keep away from big trees in the garden.

A good, strong foundation is most important for a patio.  This should be done with proper care.  Marker pegs can be placed after measuring the patio dimensions.  Then by using a shovel, dig the ground according to the measurements.

Once the foundation base is dug out, fill it with base materials like brick pieces or small stones.  Level the it until it looks smooth and cover it with a thin layer of sand.  Next, start from either end of the patio and lay stone slabs.

Fill the place with mortar, and cover the back of each slab with mortar before you lay it down into the mortared area.  Start in the corner with the first slab of the foundation.  Then slowly put all the slabs in place one by one in place and fill in the gaps with mortar.

Make sure that the slabs are all in the same level.  If you feel that there is a difference

in the level, then fill that place with some more mortar and then place the slab. Use a level to maintain a level surface as you continue. If small spaces remain in between, then the slabs can be cut according to the size needed and placed in the gaps.  The mortar should be left to set for 48 hours.
