The format of Blu-ray allows for storage capacity in excess of five times what the traditional DVD can hold. A blue laser instead of a red laser is used and allows for a smaller focus laser beam to enable smaller and higher density pits on the disc. This is what enable there to be more data in a smaller amount of space.
